Exploring the Future of AI with the Jakarta EE Community

At Payara, we’re passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the Jakarta EE ecosystem. Today, we’re excited to share that together with members of the Jakarta EE community, we helped kick off a new open initiative under the Eclipse Foundation – Jakarta Agentic AI.

AI agents represent one of the most exciting frontiers in modern software, from automating operations and improving system reliability, to generating code and supporting smarter user experiences. With technologies like Large Language Models (LLMs), Machine Learning (ML), and Natural Language Processing (NLP), agentic systems can observe, plan, and act with minimal human input – transforming industries and redefining how developers build software.

Jakarta EE is one of the most established and powerful ecosystems in enterprise Java. Hence, we believe it should have a seat at the table as this transformation unfolds.

What is Jakarta Agentic AI?

Jakarta Agentic AI is a new open specification proposal designed to make it easier to build, deploy, and run AI agents within Jakarta EE runtimes. The goal is to define vendor-neutral APIs and patterns that allow developers to explore AI agents in a consistent and community-driven way.

The project aims to:

  • Define common lifecycles and APIs for agentic workloads on Jakarta EE.
  • Offer pluggable integration with existing AI frameworks such as LangChain4j or Spring AI – without attempting to standardize them.
  • Use a fluent, annotation-based Java API, built on familiar Jakarta EE technologies like CDI, REST, and Config.
  • Encourage portability across Jakarta EE runtimes while remaining open to integration with other Java frameworks.

In other words, it’s about giving Java developers the tools to explore agentic AI in a standardized, open, and collaborative way.

A Community Effort

The Jakarta Agentic AI project was proposed by Payara and Reza Rahman, a long-time community advocate, Java Champion, and founder of the Java EE Guardians (now Jakarta EE Ambassadors) – a grassroots community initiative supporting the evolution and adoption of Jakarta EE.

The project is developed in collaboration with other contributors from across the Jakarta EE ecosystem, including Oracle, Fujitsu, London Java Community, OmniFish, Werner Keil, Istanbul JUG & Garden State JUG.

As with all Jakarta EE initiatives, this is a community-driven effort. The goal is to experiment, collaborate, and learn together. Through open discussion and iteration, we can help ensure that Jakarta EE remains a relevant and innovative platform for years to come.

Join the Conversation

We know there’s a wide range of perspectives around AI – and that’s exactly why this initiative is important. Progress happens when we explore, discuss, and build together. Whether you’re an AI enthusiast, a Jakarta EE veteran, or simply curious about what’s next, your input is valuable.

Let’s make sure Jakarta EE continues to lead the way in innovation – not as a bystander, but as an active, collaborative community shaping the future of intelligent, agent-driven Java applications.
