What’s New in the July 2022 Payara Platform Release?

Jakarta EE

The Enterprise-only 2022 July Payara Platform release is here!

Payara Platform Enterprise 5.41.0 brings 2 bug fixes, 2 component upgrades, and 2 improvements.

This month, this includes improving the functionality of the Upgrade Tool, which is available to Payara Enterprise customers only. Also only for Enterprise users is Azul’s supported OpenJDK build for enterprises, Azul Platform Core. In this release, we’ve updated our Docker images to support new versions of Azul Platform Core. We’ve also updated our Docker images of previous releases with these new versions of Azul Platform Core.

An Enterprise subscription means you can access special benefits like the Upgrade Tool and bundled Azul Platform Core support, as well as being able to continue using earlier Jakarta EE versions after Jakarta EE 10 is released this month (see below).  All these benefits mean an Enterprise subscription can be more cost-effective in the long-run!

You can request Payara Platform Enterprise 5.41.0here.

You can also take a deep-dive into the release in ournew and improved release notesand documentation! Check them out for this releasehere.

Remember: We are getting much closer to Jakarta EE 10 and Payara 6. Payara 5 Community will soon be discontinued.  It will be replaced by Payara 6 Community, which will only runJakarta EE10 applications. If you want to keep using earlier Java EE/Jakarta EE versions – we encourage you to move to Payara 5 Enterprise. Find out more:

Improved Upgrade Tool

TheUpgrade Toolis an Enterprise-only feature.  It makes the process of upgrading from one version of Payara Server Enterprise to the next faster and easier; you can upgrade to a new version with a single Admin CLI command, and should anything go wrong, you can use the rollback-server command to go to your previous version.

With this release, we fix a bug where the osgi.properties file was failing to update to a new version,  necessitating a cumbersome solution where you had to manually patch the file. Now, users will be able to upgrade more easily, with the file updating automatically.

Improved Payara Micro Shutdown and Updated Docker Images

Improvements and component upgrades this month include makingPayara Micro shutdown with Ctrl +Cwork better for all users.

A benefit of Payara Enterprise is that it comes withAzul Platform Core for Distribution,Azul’s supportedOpenJDKbuild. This month, we update our Docker images to work with new versions of Azul Platform Core.

Payara 4 to Enter Extended Support

If you are using Payara Platform version 4.x, please note it will be entering itsExtended Support phaseas of August 2022. You have been emailed about this, but be aware that monthly patches will stop being released for the current minor version, and we’ll stop implementing hotfixes and backport fixes for releases older than 4.1.2.191. If you are using older releases, please upgrade your environments as soon as possible to receive proper support!

We are encouraging all users to migrate to Payara 5 Enterprise at their discretion.
